Google made Gemini 3.5 Flash the default model in AI Mode, now used by more than a billion people a month. For professional firms, the target is shifting from ranking a link to being named inside the AI answer.
What changed
At its I/O 2026 event on 19 May 2026, Google announced the biggest set of changes to Search in years, reframing it from a list of links toward an AI-led assistant. Two moves matter for how clients find you.
First, AI Mode got a new default engine and a redesigned search box. Google made Gemini 3.5 Flash "the new default model in AI Mode for everyone globally," and called the redesign "the biggest upgrade to our Search box in over 25 years." The box now expands for longer, conversational questions, offers AI-powered suggestions beyond autocomplete, and accepts text, images, files, videos, and even open Chrome tabs. It began rolling out from 19 May 2026 across desktop and mobile, in every country and language where AI Mode is available.
Second, Google added information agents: persistent background helpers that watch the web on a topic you choose ("keep me updated on...") and summarise what is new. These agents started rolling out on 12 June 2026 to paid Google AI Ultra subscribers only at launch, across all AI Mode markets and languages. Google says AI Pro subscribers are next, with a wider or free rollout possible later in 2026. That is a stated plan, not a commitment.
For scale, Google says AI Mode has "surpassed one billion monthly users," with queries "more than doubling every quarter since launch." This is confirmed by Google itself, not a rumour or an unannounced ranking change.
What it means for you
The place people find a firm is moving from a ranked list of blue links toward a single synthesised answer. Ranking well still helps, but being named and cited inside that answer is becoming its own goal. This practice, sometimes called answer-engine or generative-engine optimisation, is still emerging and contested, not a settled playbook, so treat confident "how to rank in AI" pitches with caution.
Persistent agents change the rhythm too. A prospect no longer has to search for you at the moment they need you. An agent quietly monitoring "best advisory firm in Melbourne" can surface, or omit, your name in unprompted updates. What these systems draw on is consistent, accurate, well-structured information about your firm across the web.
None of this demands panic or a rebuild. Keep your public facts current and consistent, state your expertise plainly where AI systems can read it, and watch whether enquiries start to mention that an AI assistant suggested you. The measured response beats a scramble.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to change my website right now?
No. Nothing about this requires an urgent rebuild. The sensible first step is making sure your firm's public information, including services, locations, credentials, and contact details, is accurate and consistent everywhere, because that is what AI answers draw on.
Will this hurt my Google rankings?
This is not a ranking penalty. Google is changing how results are presented, moving from a list of links toward a conversational answer. Ranking still matters, but being named inside the answer is becoming a separate goal.
Is optimising for AI answers a proven strategy?
Not yet. The idea of optimising to be cited by AI, known as answer-engine or generative-engine optimisation, is emerging and debated, not a settled method. Be wary of anyone selling guaranteed "rank in AI Mode" results.
Who can actually use these new features?
The Gemini 3.5 Flash default and the redesigned conversational search box are rolling out to everyone using AI Mode worldwide. The new information agents launched on 12 June 2026 for paid Google AI Ultra subscribers only, with Google AI Pro named as next.
What are information agents in plain terms?
They are background helpers inside AI Mode that keep watching the web on a topic you choose and summarise what is new, so a person can stay updated about a subject, or a supplier, without searching again each time.
